hitchhiking with my parents

when my parents got an invitation for dinner with my dad's boss' at lodo denver's rodizio grill, i seized the opportunity to hitchhike with my parents down to the ecclectic area. lodo, which recently gained more popularity among the teens and tweens by being featured in real world denver, has always had my heart. admittedly, a lot has to do with my colorado upbringing, but it definitely is hip in its own respects. although it will never be near los angeles, new york, london, or tokyo on the charts, lodo is a nestled area in the heart of colorado's capital city.

if you're ever in denver looking for a coffee shop, restaurant, hotel, book store, or even vespa shop, you should look no further than lodo (forgive me, colorado's suave lingo is translated as the district of lower downtown [denver]). in a matter of one block as i am sitting in common grounds looking out the window across the intersection of 17th and wazee, i can see the famous oxford hotel, the barth hotel; bd's mongolian grill and jax bar and grill, business offices, lofts, furniture stores and italian restaurants and a martini bar/club while almost catchig 16th street mall in the distance.

even though it seems as though i am in seattle since it's raining (you know, since it always rains in seattle - please catch the facetiousness in my voice), it actually sets the mood well for a wednesday may night. i know, i would love for it to be sunny and 80 outside, but i have to catch all the seasons while i'm back home - for those of you who don't know, i just graduated from college and am moving back to virginia in three weeks. the only thing that could make the ambiance a bit more sincere would be me having brought my pipe while drinking coffee on the intersection. colorado's no smoking laws disallowed me from doing so as i would be in the no-smoke zone since i would inevitably be too close to the public coffee shop.

common grounds really is a nice coffee shop nestled in lodo. if you're looking for a quaint getaway with few people and an organized sitting area, you may want to move past common grounds to ink! (of which i am very fond of as well). there are always business people (on their pc's in their suits with their slick clothes and unmistakable style) slaving away trying to figure out the next real estate deal or the local college student (on their mac with their ipod headphones and their urban dress with their artsy accessories) designing for their portfolio or the middle aged women (who had just jumoed out of their volvos while wearing birkenstocks and a north face fleece) trying to catch up with friends or the local low-income residents (who may not be in the most current attire or be the best groomed, but nonetheless they are no less welcomed and in fact are known personally by the baristas and even shown favor to - to the coffee shop's credit).

common grounds has posters on the wall of the upcoming battle of the bands and the next art show in cherry creek. people are often seen perusing the posters or random publications lying around. you can pick a book off the wall of book shelves to keep you entertained. walking to the bathroom you can find free publications to take ranging from denver's westord, to health magazines, to band's cds, to real estate guides. the not-so-organized sitting area has wood floors, wood tables, wood chairs, chandeliers, and even an antique piano (that is not to be played mind you).

as for me, i prefer to indulge in a one-of-a-kind treat that i have not seen at any other coffee shop than common ground (if it exists elsewhere, forgive my ignorance), and my treat of choice while drinking the uncommon ground house blend is the very simple, the very tasty, and the very unique bowl of granola in steamed milk. i often crave this treat when i am outside of the lodo boundaries, but intriguingly it is captivating once tasted. the baristas will steam your milk of choice and pour it over the granola and your senses will be treated, your body will be warmed, and your mind will become renewed.

and so ends my hitchhiking experience for this rainy yet non-gloomy may night. if you're ever in town to partake in any of the exciting adventures that denver offers, you will not be disappointed stopping by common grounds. the people are friendly. the location is great. the coffee is smooth.
