steve tesich

the name might not mean anything to anyone anywhere, but around this household, his name carries meaning. who the heck is he?

steve tesich went to indiana university and used to race bicycles. he would always get "upset" racing against my dad as my dad could draft off of him, but my dad's size disallowed tesich to draft off of my dad. apparently that was a common occurrence. "janelle, why don't you sit up a little more so i can draft," he would tell my dad.

his bicycle career wasn't record-breaking, but his film career is notable. he won an oscar for writing an original screenplay in "breaking away." breaking away, starring dennis quaid, is a film about a cutter in bloomington indiana. everyone should check it out.

tesich also wrote "american flyers," starring kevin costner. both movies have some special meaning for us janelles - moreso for my dad. my dad's sponsor was cool gear which included teammates such as bob cook, davis phinney, bob shaver, and of course jim (my dad) and jack (my uncle) janelle.

bob cook won the mount evans hill climb 5 times in a row but died young. the mount evans hill climb (a 7,000 foot ascent in 28 miles finishing at over 14,000 feet takes place and finishes on the highest paved road in north america) is now named the bob evans hill climb.

davis phinney is the winningest american rider who most notably rode for the famous 7-11 team.

bob shaver went on to start shaver sports (which is kevin costner's sponsor in "american flyers").

my dad had a solid career and made a name for himself in 70's cycling including a win as a junior on mount evans.

my uncle held the mount evans record until his teammate bob cook joined the team and had a solid career too. his son, mike janelle, is now a professional racer.

"breaking away" included some cool gear jerseys in the movie, but "american flyers" story takes the riders to "hell of the west" - the famous coors classic in colorado. the last stage of this particular coors classic took place on mount evans.

i watched these two movies yesterday getting me ready for my cycling. next saturday, weather permitting, my dad and i are going to go for the hardest ride of my career. all i have to say is if i finish it, it will be the high point of my career - or anyone's career. i'll let you know how it goes.

Sean, excellent post! you did a great job of spinning some family lore. Keep writing, and keep riding.
