maria sharapova
july six, two thousand six. this match will for sure be one that will be grouped with the classics among the ages. as many readers know, i am a fan of maria sharapova. i know i'm not the only one, but i have good reasons.
what would any tennis player do when they are down six three, three one, love forty in the best out of three. for anyone that doesn't know about the scoring, i'll elaborate. women's tennis is the best two out of three sets to a match. the first one to six games wins the set (winning by two). of course tennis scoring for a game goes love, fifteen, thirty, forty (deuce if needed, then advantage) with the one who gets the point after forty or advantage winning the game - winning by two of course. confused? yeah it's confusing, especially in words.
just to put it simply, she was down a set, about to go down in the second set four one, but fought back from three one love forty (mauresmo, the opponent by the way, only had to get one point before sharapova got four in the fifth game to win). i won't even start to explain break points.
ok, so sharapova fought back from love forty three games to six in the second match to win the point, win the game, win the next four games after that to even the match at one set to one. she wasn't giving up.
momentum was on her side, so what do you think happened? actually sharapova went down four love in the third match. so naturally you think it's over, right? did you forget who i'm writing about? sharapova fought back to win the next two games. four two.
maria sharapova would go on to lose the next two games, very closely. it was probably the best ladies single match i have ever watched - despite the unfavorable outcome.
you don't know how tempted i was to go to wimbledon's website to see who won (a lot of times sports played in europe, or elsewhere, are taped and shown at a more convenient time for prime time audiences). it was a great game between two world class ladies tennis players. hats off to both. an extra nod and smile to sharapova.
