world cup 2006

world cup two thousand six. although the united states had a very disappointing loss to the czech republic this morning (us-mountain standard time), we are very much in the running in group e. italy pulled off a much-needed win against ghana which will be our biggest contender for 2nd place i think. if we pull off wins against both ghana and italy then we will most likely advance, but we won't do it if we play like today. today we kind of looked like canada, china, congo, indonesia, and greece as these teams have been to the world cup but never scored in a world cup. i think we had more backward passes than forward and we just looked, as many have pointed out, flat. other than reyna's shot that hit the post, we looked like we were warming up for a game the whole ninety minutes. saturday, turn your televisions to abc at one o'clock us-mst.

i have to admit, it was more fun being in england during the two thousand two world cup. the spirit was more alive and people cared more. pubs stopped. shops closed. the games were the most important events of the time. it has been impressive though how locals have adapted to the events.

forget hockey. forget basketball. although these are respectable sports, and i usually like watching hockey more, the world cup is a once-every-four-years event and loved by all (well, except canada, china, congo, indonesia, and greece). do it, and you'll be glad.
