craig deacon
the name might not mean anything to most people, but around fort collins soccer, it's a big name. with a resumé unrivaled by most people, he is a standout in fort collins.
born in london, england, he has played division 3, 2, and 1 soccer in england. he has coached in several countries and states including the fort collins women's professional soccer team, the fort collins force. he started his own soccer camp, core soccer, which has won two national titles. craig deacon knows coaching. craig deacon knows soccer.
as this is the year of soccer, i am busy during my free time watching world cup and now playing on a team. i was debating playing as soccer doesn't have the same glamour as it used to. if me, my teammates, everyone we played, and all the fans had class and maturity, soccer would be fun. craig deacon does not have class.
his "core staff" team, made up of primarily brits, is the best team in the men's competitive league - no question about it. they play with chemistry, they play with spark, and they play with creativity. it's hard, and nearly impossible for us, to stop them.
a simple example of the teams non-class is when we shot at the goal and phil cooper stuck out his hand to stop the goal. someone who's played division 1 soccer in england as phil has knows not to do that. if the refs weren't the "core staff's" players, phil should have received a red card. that doesn't matter though, it's not about the red card, it's about class. ridiculous, yeah. forgivable, yeah.
what gets to me is craig. craig, as stated earlier, is a great player and coach. it felt good to score the first goal yesterday as we slid past them twice. we were practicing long shots before the game but i couldn't hit the goal in the game. admittedly, they probably got in my head. now back to craig. last year it started. as i received a pass from a friend, i stepped between craig and the ball using my body as a shield. i was a textbook play if i must say so myself. as he tried to kick the ball, he tripped over me and raised his hands in disgust as he thought he should get a call. anyone who has ever played division 1 soccer in england or even watched any soccer ever knows that that is a very acceptable play.
last night as we were getting beaten, probably 8-2 at least, my friend was dribbling toward the goal and i, having been a student of soccer as i have studied games upon games, stood in front of craig providing a screen and a shield - again a perfectly legal play. he then proceeded to push me from behind. sure, that's fine, he was frustrated and he retaliated. i can handle that. rightfully so, i got the call and there was a free kick. what happened next is what bothered me.
the "core staff" is loved by many people. kids who go to the core training camp, who watch force games, and are in awe of their ability, admire the "core staff." unfortunately, craig doesn't take this to heart...craig said to me, "stop being a dickhead in front of the kids, our fans. they are watching" as he said it loud enough for the kids, our fans to hear. i didn't cry to my parents as i was called that, but i was disappointed as craig deacon, the coach for the force that kids love to watch and a trainer for core soccer that kids are the nucleus of the camp, said that in front of the fans. as craig deacon is one of the greatest players in fort collins and has so many people admiring him, he should have class. he should shake off his fouls. he should have fun and be a good sport. i take that back, he's not one of the greatest soccer players in fort collins. the great soccer players don't just have skills, they have class, charisma, and character. craig deacon doesn't.
